Ogle Models and Prototypes have reaffirmed their support to the British Human Powered Flying Club (BHPFC) by acting as a sponsor for the upcoming Icarus Cup. Fresh off the back of a hugely successful maiden event last year, the Icarus Cup will return for a second year, this time at Lasham Airfield, and Ogle will once again provide a special prize for the winning team.
The BHPFC was first created in 2014 by a group of Human Powered Aircraft (HPA) enthusiasts. The club’s first ever competition was held at Lasham in 2014, the location of this year’s event, growing rapidly in a short space of time. The growth of the sport of HPA was highlighted last year in the first ever Icarus Cup, with teams from around the world entering the event that produced a thrilling and high level of competition.
In what was a year of firsts for the BHPFC, last year’s Icarus Cup also saw Charlotte Barford became the first British female to fly a human powered aircraft. That has only helped raise the bar ahead of this year’s event, which will be held between 15-23 July. Once again, as well as the honour of lifting the Icarus Cup trophy, this year’s winning team will win an additional and unique prize: a 3D printed model of their choosing, created by event sponsor, Ogle Models and Prototypes.
Last year’s winners, a team from the University of Bath, walked away from last year’s competition with their own 3D printed prizes. The students must have been impressed with their models as one of them went on to contact Ogle for help developing a propeller hub for an aircraft he was working on earlier this year. With the reigning champions not competing this year, a packed field of competitors, including a team from the University of Bordeaux.
