When the new Farringdon Elizabeth line station opened in May as part of the long-awaited Crossrail project, the Ogle team were keen to see inside.
Plans for the station had been ongoing for several years with an initial opening date of 2018, but the construction was delayed as the costs spiralled, eventually going more than £4billion over budget.
It had been a long wait for Ogle to see the full-size development of the architectural model they had created for Aedas Architects way back in 2016. It has provided an ideal opportunity for them to look back at the original model which was created with great intricacy and attention to even the smallest detail.
From some drawings and an artist’s impression, Ogle’s experts worked with architect Soji Abass to create a complex 1/50th scale model.
The Farringdon Station complex has two platform tunnels, each 245m long, between east and west ticket halls. With several escalators and walkways included, it was a challenging proposition to create a sturdy model the architects could use to demonstrate their vision.
But, under General Manager Dave Orman, the team made use of an impressive range of techniques and materials to bring the scheme to life.
The starting point was to construct a sturdy outer structure using white and clear acrylic materials. On to this all the different elements of the model were added.
Clear acrylic was used to achieve the desired effect. As each part was constructed using the most appropriate process, it was added to the outer structure and the model took shape. Once completed it was all finished in Ogle’s dedicated finishing department to precisely match the colour specification as dictated by the brief.
Richard Savory, Model Shop Project Co-ordinator, said: “Creating the Farringdon model was one of the most complex and intricate pieces of work we have done at Ogle. But we never shy away from a challenge. Knowing that it has finally been constructed as part of the opening of the Elizabeth line gives us all a tremendous sense of satisfaction.”
