At Ogle, we believe that the future of modelmaking depends on our ability to nurture fresh talent and open the door to people from all walks of life. Our industry thrives on creativity, technical precision and innovation, but these skills don’t develop by chance.
They’re passed down and reimagined by each new generation. That’s why we’re committed to creating pathways that give aspiring makers the tools, experience and confidence to succeed.
And we’re proud to be part of a group, chaired by Foster + Partners, to develop the UK’s first Model Maker Apprenticeship Standard, a degree level qualification to equip the next generation of model makers with the skills, knowledge and hands-on experience they need to thrive. Working in collaboration with the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE), along with a range of creative companies and universities, we’re helping to shape an exciting new route into our industry.
Approved last year, the three-year programme is a Level 6 qualification, equivalent to a bachelor’s degree, with the first intake due to begin in September. Apprentices will learn their craft in a real workplace environment, such as here at Ogle, alongside additional training provided by Bournemouth University. Best of all, they’ll pay no tuition fees, will receive a salary and will enjoy all the benefits that come with being an employee.
This fantastic scheme will bridge the gap between creative companies and academia, combining hands-on model-making experience with academic learning to prepare apprentices for careers in industries ranging from architecture and engineering to product design and film.
Philip Martin, Director, says: “Here at Ogle, innovation is our lifeblood. For us, helping to develop the scheme was an easy decision. We believe in training the next generation, future-proofing our industry and opening doors for people from all backgrounds.
“This is also about going back to our roots and championing a hands-on learning model that’s relevant across all sectors.”
While our focus is firmly on the future, we’re also proud to celebrate our heritage. This year, we became an official member of Made in Britain, the national collective mark that brings together the best UK manufacturers. Every precision-engineered scale model and fully functioning prototype we create here in Hertfordshire reflects the craftsmanship, creativity and quality that British manufacturing stands for.
By championing the Model Maker Apprenticeship Scheme and joining Made in Britain, we’re making a clear statement: we’re committed to preserving and elevating the craft of model making – for today’s clients and for tomorrow’s makers.
